Let's begin with a diagram of my workflow for this project.

Initially, I intended to create a still shot similar to my references. However, it felt too simple and empty. The 'steam' effect was added later on.

This was the first render that was close to the final composition. However, I wasn't satisfied with the glass, and it seemed that Lumen couldn’t render its caustics effectively. Therefore, I decided to switch to a more detailed design.

I did the animation and audio editing in the Unreal sequencer.

I used three panel lights to achieve the desired lighting and two black blocks as light blockers. The block on the left also helped create a slightly darker reflection on the knife blade edge and cleaner reflections on the glass.

The difference with and without the light blockers.

Foodogrammetry

Last time I played Final Fantasy XV, I was reminded of how much I liked the food serving sequences. So, I decided to create my own using Unreal Engine 5.4.3 with hardware Lumen and RealityCapture. Believe it or not, the most challenging part of this project for me was actually cooking the food.

I did the retopology in Maya and modeled the plate and glass in 3ds Max. The table, napkin, and bread are from Megascans, while the cutlery came from a free model bank. I slightly modified their shapes, used better materials from Megascans, and engraved text on the knife to give the blade a less flat appearance.
